Diabetes Management Program in Gould & Dumas, ARDiabetes is a common condition that needs careful monitoring and management. DePaul Community Health Centers provides people who have diabetes or prediabetes an opportunity to learn self-management skills.
Our diabetes self-management program offers individualized assessments and nutrition planning with a registered dietitian. Our program also includes:
- One-on-one education
- Classroom education
- Cooking classes
- Diabetes and prediabetes definitions
- Physical activity
- Healthy eating
- Blood sugar monitoring
- Avoiding and treating complications, including foot care
- Diabetes medications
Other highlights of our classes include door prizes, such as diabetes socks, portion plates that show the correct amounts of food to eat at each meal, and cookbooks. In addition, we serve a diabetes-friendly meal at every class, and we provide recipes for all the dishes so that class members can make the foods at home.
Diabetes self-management classes are held regularly in Dumas, McGehee, and Lake Village. We also travel to other towns to offer classes, including Dewitt, Star City, Dermott, and Monticello. Classes are funded by a number of grants from the Frueauff Foundation, Daughters of Charity Foundation, and Arkansas Community Foundation. This funding allows us to offer our classes free of charge to people throughout southeast Arkansas.
